Definitions
This section of our website is designed to familiarize you as an Insured and a mariner with some of the terms used by surveyors, Underwriters, Insurance Brokers, Agents and Adjusters and other sailors.
They are explained here as a convenience and not as a legal reference. Your policy document is the final authority on policy terms and your attorney is the person to consult for a legal opinion on terms and conditions.

Marine conversions
1 Nautical mile (1 knot) =
1.15 Statutory Mile = 6080 feet =1 minute of arc on the earth's surface
1 Fathom = 6 feet
10 cables = 1 Nautical mile
1 point on the compass = 11.25 degrees
1 metre = 3.2808 feet= 39.3 inches
1 Statutory mile = 1.6093 kilometres
Engine types
Outboard - a detachable motor
fixed to the transom
Inboard/Outboard, Stern drive, I/O - engine to the rear of the
vessel, but enclosed inside the vessel with the drive portion outside of the
transom
Inboard - Engine enclosed inside the vessel, mostly located in the
centre of the vessel but sometimes located near the rear of the vessel (if a
V-drive type). Drive (propellor) shaft extends rearward out of the bottom of
the vessel through the stuffing box and attaches to the propellor
